Systemised vs Systematised

August 4, 2011

I recently encountered a situation where a friend insisted on using the word ‘systemised’ where I thought he meant ‘systematised’ and yet he insisted that ‘systematised’ was wrong and that ‘systemised’ was the correct word.  After thinking it through, and in ignorance of the American word ‘systemized’, I decided that, yes, he was correct.  For what he meant, there was need to coin a new word.  Thus:

Systemise:  To arrange into a system that is internally consistent, efficient and effective.

as compared to

Systematise: To arrange into a system.

The exact meaning of systemise needs to be allowed to evolve a little, but take this as the starting point for this word’s life.
